Define the evaluation question
An evaluation request should identify what the team needs to understand. Concerns may involve speech clarity, language comprehension, expression, social communication or access to an effective communication system. The assessment plan is selected for the individual student and referral question rather than assuming that every student needs the same tests.
Support for districts and school teams
AU can discuss individual evaluations or a defined group of referrals, including increased assessment demand and evaluation backlogs. The scope can include records review, assessment, educational-impact analysis, report writing and discussion of findings with the team.
- Initial speech-language evaluations
- Speech-language reevaluations
- School communication and educational-impact review
- AAC evaluation support when included in the referral
- Report preparation and ARD/IEP participation by agreement
Independent speech-language evaluations
Families and districts can inquire about a speech-language independent educational evaluation, or IEE. Before accepting the work, AU reviews the requested discipline, independence, assessment scope and applicable contracting requirements. An inquiry does not determine who will fund the evaluation or guarantee a particular eligibility or service recommendation.
Part of a larger special education evaluation
A full individual evaluation may involve several disciplines. AU’s speech-language assessment is one part of that work when communication is a concern. Requests for additional evaluation disciplines depend on available appropriately qualified professionals and a clearly defined scope. A school assessment and a medical diagnosis serve different purposes.
Common questions
Is a speech screening the same as an evaluation?
No. A screening is a more limited check. A comprehensive evaluation addresses a defined referral question using an appropriate assessment process.
Can we request a speech-language IEE?
Yes. Contact AU to discuss the request. Acceptance depends on the required scope, independence and availability; funding and school requirements must be established separately.
What should an initial inquiry include?
Include the general concern, requested discipline, student age range, service location and relevant timing. Please avoid sending student records or sensitive details through ordinary email.
